As part of the latest update to the 360 dashboard, Microsoft will be locking third party memory units so they won't work with 360. Quick sell it now! "Don't use unauthorized Xbox 360 storage devices," is the message being sent from Microsoft's Major Nelson. There's no clear reason given for the move but it's likely to have something to do with piracy. "When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360," stated Nelson. "If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to 'back it up,' you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games." A quick check of Google shows that Datel has a 2GB units on offer and they'll be hit the hardest. We've contacted Datel for a response to the move. User comments following Major's news were unsurprisingly full of talk about Microsoft forcing them to buy more expensive, official units and the like. "Not sure if this will get read by many, but I have echoed some of the concerns posted here w/ the accessories team," responded Nelson. Will third-party pads be next? Once it starts where will it end? Have your say below.

Completely agree, call Microsoft with this reference number - 1115289349 - to argue it out with them over this issue.

I bet 3rd party controllers and headsets will be next on the microsoft market domination agender... Technically what they are doing is illegal, its breaking "Fair competetion" laws, but who will file a lawsuit against Microsoft? They will just get r*ped by Microsofts legal team.

headsets are far too simple to be detected.

I know, its not digitally signed or anything.. plug in and thats it.. whereas memory units have software on them to tell the 360 what it is. Hopefully we will find a work around.

    This is a trust/monopoly.

Therefore the constitution has been broken. I'm taking this to legal court.

I'm pretty sure monopolies are illegalized so they can't legally lock out ALL accessories, seeing as a memory device is just ONE accessories out of the hundreds, there's no arguing.

Also people are looking over the fact that the third party accessories allow modding.... also I think that the units use a special set of information to even be recognized by the 360, which would make it illegal to produce the hardware. I mean, it's at least true with the hard drives.

It wouldn't be as bad if they weren't try to hide the fact that there trying to get sales off it. Either tell people your a ****** bag or hide it well. Microsoft has done neither. They didn't even provide a ******** reason, shamon.

The latest update locks out 3rd Party memory units using Storage size of device, if it isn't a certain size it doesn't allow. Maybe we can get round this by breaking up the memory unit into 512mb chunks? OR Get 512mb MicroSD cards for the Datel Memory units.

Ah, but are the microsoft MU's exactly 512MB?

Surely, if you were to create an exact copy of a microsoft one (using Xplorer360 or something)(like you can with the HDDs) and wrote that to a non-official one, it would work?

If it doesn't work, it means there's something clever going on withthem, probably a hardware issue, not a software issue :D
