Getting Halo2 Vista to work on Windows XP

Instructions:

1) Unpack/extract Halo2Patch.rar

2) You will notice three folders. They are named after the place you must put them. The

mf.dll file in the system32 folder goes to [Main XP Drive]:WINDOWSsystem32 . Usually,

that means the folder you'll drop them in is C:WINDOWSsystem32.

3) Next is the Halo 2 folder. You won't be moving anything from there... yet. First, insert

the Halo 2 DVD or mount the Halo 2 disk image now. An error message is likely to pop up,

stating something about TokenW missing from a dll file. Ignore it.

4) Now, go into the Halo 2 folder. Right click on Loader.exe and create a shortcut. Now,

right click that shortcut and go to it's Properties at the bottom of the menu. Next, click

the target box. Depending on where you download files to, it may look like something like

this: "C:Documents and SettingsErikAzureus DownloadHalo 2 XP PatchLoader.exe" . All

that matters is that the shortcut points to the Loader.exe . After the destination shown

above, type in: "[Drive that the disk or disk image is in]:Startup.exe"

5) Double click the shortcut now. The disk will load up fine and show you a window with four

options: Play while installing, Custom install, install dedicated server and install map

edtor. CHoose the second option, also known as Custom Install.

6) At that point, choose the bullet that says Install without playing. After you accept, the

disk will go about installing Halo 2 for the next ten to fifteen minutes at most, depending

on your drive speed.

7) After it is done installing, exit the disk. Remember that Halo 2 folder? Time to use it

again, this time to move it. Delete the shortcut for Loader.exe we made before, to prevent

from mixing up which shortcut is which. Then, move all the contents of the Halo 2 folder

to the folder that you installed Halo 2 on on your computer. Example path:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo 2

8) Go back to the download folder which has this Read me. In the Desktop folder, there are two

files. Do NOT install them, but keep them in mind for later. These will be helpful in the

known bugs section of this Read Me.

9) Go to your Halo 2 install directory, ie where it is on your computer. Go to Loader.exe .

We're going to make a new shortcut for it, so please right click and make the shortcut.

Afterwards, right click the shortcut and select properties and go to the Target box. Once

again, it should point to the Loader.exe in your Halo 2 folder, in example:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo 2Loader.exe"

After that please the path to your halo2.exe file. This is how it would look on many

computers:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo 2halo2.exe"

SO IN TOTAL IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo 2Loader.exe" "C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo 2halo2.exe"

10) Move the shortcut to wherever you desire. After that, double click it to play!

Known Bugs:

1) The game asks for activation after the first or twelfth level played in campaign.

SOLUTION: None known. There is no crack for this yet, nor has the author been inclined to

crack the game.

2) The game loads up through the logo but then crashesfreezes/crashes back to my desktop.

SOLUTION: Remember those files in Desktop? Time to use them. Right click them and select

install on both of them. THis should fix the problem, in conjunction with the two

files in your Halo 2 folder named: xinput9_1_0.dll and xinput9_1_0_x86 .

3) The game won't let me play online/join an LAN or online game/create a LAN or online game.

SOLUTION: It's out there, though I have this problem and am not able to figure it out. If you

do know how to do so (I have a valid LIVE account and CD key), then please, tell me.

4) I screwed up. I need to uninstall but the Add/Remove programs doesn't work.

SOLUTION: Indeed it doesn't. I would be surprised if it did for XP. At any rate, nuke all Halo 2

files in your computer. Make sure to use regedit to find and destroy any Halo 2

registry values. Delete the Halo 2 Application Data in the Application Data folder.

(Application Data is hidden, so you may need to change your folder options to see it).

If you try to follow the directions but still get an error message saying elements

of the Halo 2 game are missing, then keep looking. You will find all the parts needed

to be deleted.

5) I get the TokenW error in my advap321.dll file error! HELP!

SOLUTION: Re-read the instuctions carefully. This should only happen if you do not use the

Loader.exe provided.

6) LIVE tries to update but crashes all the time.

SOLTUION: The bug #2 is meant to deal with this as well, I believe, but am not sure. I will

update this when demonoid.com comes back up (I was mainly posting on their torrents

to figure out how to fix my install). At worst, you may need to look around for a

LIVE update that works and run that. But this is an unknown. Again, I apologize,

but I began documenting this while demonoid.com was down.

This is the work of another. I am only repackaging this and restating the Read Me for the ease

of use for others, so they may go through a less hassling install experience than my two day

ordeal was.
