Slidell Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 (edited) Until now, the so-called Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) made up of photons was thought impossible. In this material, the particles are all in their lowest energy state and behave as a single entity. The BEC was created in 1995, but scientists had thought it could not be possible with photons, which are basic units of light, because photons simply disappear when they are cooled down. Researchers thought photons would be unable to achieve this state because it seemed impossible to cool light and concentrate it at the same time. However, German scientists have solved this problem and achieved this BEC state with photons. “Many scientists believed that it would not be possible, but I was pretty sure that it would work,†Martin Weitz of the University of Bonn in Germany, told LiveScience. The researchers bounced photons between two mirrors and located them extremely close together. Weitz said in a interview that a dye placed between the mirrors absorbed the photons and reemitted them, in the process cooling down the photons to room temperature. The researchers fired a laser into that dye, increasing the number of photons absorbed and reabsorbed. The researchers say that the discovery is for now strictly a research phenomenon, but it holds the promise of an new source of X and UV-ray light that behaves like a laser. Lockon Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 We should all thank Germans because their the ones who made nearly all medicines
jmdalmighty Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 We should all thank Germans because their the ones who made nearly all medicines It's more thanks to Canada then anyone else as they invited the electron microscope which allows you to see how the cells respond to the medicine. Also since 90% of UKs export is medicine maybe we should thank them as well lol.
Randomrocket Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 and thank america for cars and the japanese for robots and the chinese for silk and the russians for the ak47..... 1
