iTerry Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 COICA In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday. If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed form the internet and not just in the US. Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information. Stop the Internet Blacklist And if you are a US citizen, please take the time sign this petitionDemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist! Stop the Internet Blacklist! Just the other day, President Obama urged other countries to stop censoring the Internet. But now the United States Congress is trying to censor the Internet here at home. A new bill being debated this week would have the Attorney General create an Internet blacklist of sites that US Internet providers would be required to block. This is the kind of heavy-handed censorship you'd expect from a dictatorship, where one man can decide what web sites you're not allowed to visit. But the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to pass the bill this week -- and Senators say they haven't heard much in the way of objections! That's why we need you to sign our urgent petition to Congress demanding they oppose the Internet blacklist. PETITION TO THE SENATE: Censoring the Internet is something we'd expect from China or Iran, not the U.S. Senate. You need to stop this Internet blacklist in its tracks and oppose S. 3804. \
Lockon Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Ahh how ironic...America the free speech country now censering that right.
gruntmods Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Ahh how ironic...America the free speech country now censering that right.1. It hasn't even been voted on yet.2. You cannot completely remove a site from the internet with a US law unless it is hosted in the US.

Quinn Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 How ironic, you're on an american website..... This is total bs if congress does pass this law.... Wouldn't they have to physically hack servers to take down websites? Actually, theres more than a few Canadians on this site. And I didn't mean **** you from Ibotmodz, I meant **** you from Canada. Quinn Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 And what country brags about 'freedom'? USA, Canada... but yet it seems when people start to protest (at least in Canada), the Riot Police come on out for the party. Freedom of speech my ass.
.Slack♠ Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Youre ******* stupid to even be worried about this. Even in the 1 in a zillion chance it happens what changes for you? less porn? this is USA.

Randomrocket Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Youre ******* stupid to even be worried about this. Even in the 1 in a zillion chance it happens what changes for you? less porn? this is USA.The point is, its a step in the wrong direction. Soon the government might try to strengthen the law and make all websites pay a tax to stay online in america or something. And if you say the wrong thing on the site, you'll get cut. V for Vendetta is a good movie. 1
Lockon Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 1. Servers may be located in the USA2. Taking down sites which will go down for other countries.
gruntmods Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 USA, Canada... but yet it seems when people start to protest (at least in Canada), the Riot Police come on out for the party. Freedom of speech my ass.Freedom of speech does not include destroying cars.
iBotPeaches Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 I know some of the newer laws don't care where the server is physically. It matters where the owner/operator is from.
Quinn Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Freedom of speech does not include destroying cars. That was like what? 5 people?
gruntmods Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 That was like what? 5 people?are you kidding, did you see the crowd?
Randomrocket Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 are you kidding, did you see the crowd?Did something happen recently? lol 1
Quinn Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 are you kidding, did you see the crowd? Most of the crowd were peaceful protesters. Only a few were looting, and burning cars. There should have been uniforms, not riot police. I still can't believe they spent 2 billion on random shit. I hope our next elections soon... :/Did something happen recently? lol Shhh ignorant american...
gruntmods Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Did something happen recently? lolat the g12 a crowd flipped a police car, in fact the riot police didn't even do anything, they formed a line and didn't attack. 1
Quinn Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 at the g12 a crowd flipped a police car, in fact the riot police didn't even do anything, they formed a line and didn't attack. mmhm, and that happened... once? The rest of the time it was a few people in the crowd ******* things up for everyone.
gruntmods Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 mmhm, and that happened... once? The rest of the time it was a few people in the crowd ******* things up for everyone.I still understand the need for riot police. If it were you rmeeting would you not want the most secure premises possible? 1
nielsss Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 "the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed form the internet and not just in the US." Only if the site is hosted in the US. By law they cannot take down a website hosted outside of the US. They can black US internet users to view that site but they wouldn't be allowed to take offline if it was hosted elsewhere. Get what I mean?
