The Easiest way to change start button text on windows xp

READ THE FULL TUT BEFORE COMMENTING! k?

AND BECAUSE I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WILL NOT LISTEN TO THE PREVIOUS STATEMENT, THE ESYWIN ADVERTISEMENT DOES GET REMOVED!

So lets get started. Shall We?

1) you are going to need 2 programs download them now.

EsyWin (Free Verson) & Res Hacker (i speak English and i used the Europe version)

For the people who cant find the downloads: EsyWin Pic Reference & Res Hacker pic reference. Thanks ibotfiles, for the upload server.

2) Install EzyWin. when that's done open it. and go to start button manager and change the text to what ever you want!

3) now you may notice that after the text you imputed it will say "-EzyWin" and now we are going to remove it!

4) open up task manager ( Ctrl + Alt + Delete ) and go to process. and look for Xplorer1.exe OR Xplorer2.exe it will be one or the other NOT Both.

Pic

5) Open Res Hacker and in res hack open which xplorer you had running (1 or 2)

and then "String Table" > "37" > "1033"

6) it will say "The Text you typed for the start button in EzyWin -EzyWin"

it does not actually say The Text you typed for the start button in EzyWin (i hope you already new that ^^)

PIC

7) open up task manager

and in the resource tab close which Xplorer is Running. (if successful the Start Bar will disperse and the icons as well)

The go to the applications tab and click Resource Hacker (It Should Pop Up)

8 ) Then in res hacker remove "- EzyWin" (DON'T REMOVE THE END QUOTE! AND THERE IS NO QUOTE BEFORE THE HYPHEN)

Here is an example of what to do: Before After

9) Now Click Compile Script then save!

10) open up task manager and in the applications tab click "new task" and open the xplorer you just edited and you done enjoy your new start button with out the EzyWin Advertisement and with out having to edit explore (i never could get that way to work)

If You are Having any problems let me know

^^I can see the guy above me will get banned very soon :D

Anyway, I prefer my method. It doesn't require EsyWin; just the resource editor (from here: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/):

1) Make a copy of explorer.exe, and call it explorer1.exe (it's in C:\WINDOWS\")

2) open explorer1.exe with the resource editor.

3) Go to string tables, and go into 37, find "Start" (or whatever text your start button already had in it) and rename it to what you want and compile the script. Then go to 38 and do the same thing. The reason you must do both is because one of them is for the XP style themes, and the other is for the classic version style. I forget which one is whigh, so just do both :)

4) Open up regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit.exe) and browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\". Open up the "Shell" value. It should say "explorer.exe". Change this to "explorer1.exe" (the one you made a copy of and edited).

5) Log off and on again. Then it will open explorer1.exe instead of explorer.exe and you will have a different start button.

You can change just about anything about your start menu with this. For example, I made my "Go" button say it was on Windows XP Dave Edition":

My method is better, because if you use your method and accidentally break explorer.exe, you're buggered :D

But yeah, it's still quite good :) What theme are you using? I've never seen a black XP-style theme before :)

Also, I think it's important that everyone knows that if you do this, "Search" will no longer work. I have no idea why, but nobody uses it anyway, so we should be fine :) If you really need to use search, just go back to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\" and change the value in "Shell" back to "explorer.exe"

Also,

is a smiley becuse it represents a smiley face with glasses 8)
