Quinn Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 This debate is about math.I had to post this because Slip thinks that BEDMAS stays true in algebra, and the rest of the shoutbox thinks he is wrong. The order of operations is reversed in algebra (I know this cause I'm doing it in math class right now). Debate
Justrec Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 The equation was some 5th grade ****. But Slip doesn't know how to do it. 6n+5=10 Which is n=.833333333 http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo289/Justrec/6n510.jpg But slip says we are wrong. Hmm. Call up a 5th grader buddy or go back and re-do algebra.
Dark Slipstream Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Equation in shoutbox was: 10 - 5 / 6. There were no letters.

Justrec Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Equation in shoutbox was: 10 - 5 / 6. There were no letters. No it wasn't. Your browser probably re-arranged it or something.
Dark Slipstream Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Yea, my browser re-arranged the letters.. lol That's definitely the solution -.-
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 n = 5/6 nuff said, its PEMDAS btw... That's what I told them! It's PEMDAS!!!They just laughed at me
T3A guy Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 wtf is bedmas?I think it's BracketsEponentsDivisionMultiplicationAdditionSubtraction
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Nooo!!!! ParenthesesExponentsMultiplyDivideAddSubtracy
T3A guy Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Nooo!!!! ParenthesesExponentsMultiplyDivideAddSubtracyParenthese are brackets?
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Nope. [ ] = Brackets ( ) = Parentheses Also Multiplication goes before Division(not that it matters but I like it that way!)
mangriff32 Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Nooo!!!! ParenthesesExponentsMultiplyDivideAddSubtracyThis is the norm for order of operations. Technically, if you included brackets [] and parentheses () it would be PBEMDAS since brackets are outside of parentheses. I'm pretty good at math, trust me lol.
iKhaosmaster Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Mangriff is correct. Here is a link for proof. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations
yungbol Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) B*tch Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Edited May 14, 2009 by yungbol
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Mnemonics are often used to help learners remember the rules. One common strategy is to build an acronym from the names of the operations. For instance, in the United States, the acronym PEMDAS (for Parentheses, Exponentiation, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction) is used, sometimes expressed as the sentence "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" or one of many other variations. In other English speaking countries, Parentheses may be called Brackets, and Exponentiation may be called Indices, Powers or Orders. Also, as Multiplication and Division are of equal precedence, M and D may be interchanged; and Of (see example 3, above) is equivalent to Multiplication. With respect to the latter operators, it is usually best to simply work from left to right. This also applies to Addition and Subtraction on most occasions. Thus, we also have BEDMAS, BIDMAS, BIMDAS, BIODMAS, BODMAS, BOMDAS and BPODMAS.
mangriff32 Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 B*tch Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Please, Bitch Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. =P
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Please, Bitch Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. =P You may be good at math but fail at grammar... Please, Bitch, excuse my dear Aunt Sally.
T3A guy Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 You may be good at math but fail at grammar... Please, Bitch, excuse my dear Aunt Sally. So do you. Please bitch, ...
Joe Walls Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 So do you. Please bitch, ... No, Bitch is used as a proper noun. Owned
yungbol Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 I honestly think these may have to venture to off-topic soon ... The debate idea sounded good, we get into things that don't have anything to do with the original post. It started at math equations, now it is grammar? When debating, the main thing you are taught to do is to not veer too off topic -.-
T3A guy Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 No, Bitch is used as a proper noun. OwnedIt's an adjective.
iBotPeaches Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 I learned it "PEMDAS" So, thats my 2 cents..
