A mod is what your looking for. Do you have FTP access to your files on your server and like phpMYadmin to change your mySQL databases?

Thats what you need to get those modifications like a chatbox and added smiles to work. If I were you download the phpbb2 to phpbb3 converter. phpBB3 offers 100x more features and security than the phpbb2. It has soo much security its the safest yet.

With free forums like freeforums.org. You do not have access to either your FTP or mySQL info, so short story you cannot install any mods with files, or file changes until you buy your own server. Thats because a free site, everyone uses the same files you just have different mySQL databases.
